  3. 1984. He began his career as a lawyer and was
  4. also active in the German Protestant church
  5. and in Christian Democratic Union party
  6. politics. He was elected to the West German
  7. Bundestag (parliament) in 1969 and served as
  8. mayor of West Berlin from 1981, before being
  9. elected federal president in 1984.
